Every year, as the month of Muharram approaches, something changes in the hearts of those who love Imam Husayn (AS). The black banners begin to appear. Familiar recitations fill homes and community centres. Conversations shift towards Karbala. For many mourners, especially those living in the West, Ashura is not simply a historical anniversary. It is a deeply personal journey.
At first glance, it can seem unusual that a tragedy which took place over 1,300 years ago continues to move millions of people to tears. Yet the story of Imam Husayn (AS) was never meant to remain confined to a particular place or time. Karbala speaks to something universal within the human soul: the struggle to remain principled in a world that constantly pressures us to compromise.
Life in the modern West often encourages comfort, convenience and self-interest. Success is frequently measured by status, wealth and personal achievement. The stand of Imam Husayn (AS) presents a completely different vision. His sacrifice reminds us that some values are more important than comfort and that truth is worth defending, even when it comes at a cost.
This is why Ashura is not only about mourning what happened in Karbala. It is also about asking ourselves difficult questions. What principles would we refuse to abandon? How do we respond when we witness injustice? Are we living in a way that would make Imam Husayn (AS) proud of us?
For many believers, Muharram becomes a spiritual reset. Just as Ramadan encourages reflection through fasting, Muharram encourages reflection through remembrance. The tears shed for Imam Husayn (AS) are not only tears of grief. They are expressions of loyalty, love and a desire to draw closer to Allah through one of His most beloved servants.
Developing a relationship with Imam Husayn (AS) begins with understanding his mission. The more we learn about his character, his compassion, his courage and his unwavering faith, the more we begin to see him as a guide rather than merely a historical figure. Through attending majalis, reciting his ziyarat, serving others in his name and striving to embody his values, that connection deepens year after year.
Perhaps this is the enduring miracle of Karbala. Despite the centuries that separate us from Ashura, Imam Husayn (AS) continues to transform lives. His message reaches across cultures, languages and generations, reminding people everywhere that dignity is found in standing with truth and that faith is most beautiful when it is lived with sincerity.
As Ashura arrives once again, mourners do not gather simply to remember a tragedy. They gather to renew a pledge. A pledge that the message of Karbala will continue to live within their hearts, their families and their communities.
“Surely there exists in the hearts of the believers, regarding the martyrdom of Husayn, a heat that never subsides.”
— Prophet Muhammad (SAWW)
