For the night of 8 Rabi al-Thani
Tonight we celebrate the birth of the Imam whom Allah chose to be the father of the Saviour of mankind. On the 8th of Rabi al-Thani — the 10th in some narrations — in 232 AH (December 846 CE), in the city of Madina, Imam Hasan al-Askari (peace be upon him) was born to the tenth Imam, Ali al-Hadi (peace be upon him) — the eleventh in the chain of Imams from the household of the Prophet.
From Madina to the Garrison City
The Imam’s early childhood began in his grandfather’s city, but the Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil soon summoned his father, Imam al-Hadi, to the new capital of Samarra, where the state could keep the family of the Prophet under permanent surveillance. So the child grew up in a garrison town, and from it took the title by which history knows him: al-Askari.
Consider what this means: an Imam raised from boyhood inside the machinery of a hostile empire — and yet the empire could not prevent him from becoming the reference point for the believers of the East and the West, from Qum to Khurasan to North Africa, who sent him their questions, their khums, and their loyalty through his network of trusted agents.
The Character Witnessed Even by Enemies
Those who dealt with the Imam in Samarra — including his jailers — left testimonies of a man unlike any other. Accounts describe prison wardens transformed by his worship: fasting by day, standing in prayer by night, with a presence that filled hardened men with awe. When pressed to harm him, one keeper replied that he could not, for he saw in him nothing but righteousness. Even under blockade, his door was the address of the poor.
This is the quiet miracle of the Ahlul Bayt: deprived of armies and treasuries, they conquered hearts — including the hearts assigned to guard them.
The Purpose of His Life
Every Imam carried the mission of his time, and the mission of Imam al-Askari was perhaps the most delicate of all: to bring into the world, and to protect, the twelfth Imam. The prophecies were known; the palace watched his household the way Pharaoh had watched the house of Imran. Yet in 255 AH (869 CE), in secrecy arranged by Allah, his son al-Mahdi was born — and the father spent his remaining years preparing the community for the occultation, training them to deal with the Imam through representatives, so that faith would survive when the Imam could no longer be seen.
He accomplished that mission completely before his martyrdom at twenty-eight. Every believer who awaits the Imam of the Age is, in a sense, a student of Imam al-Askari’s foresight.
Tonight’s Lesson
The birth we celebrate tonight teaches that no siege can stop the plan of Allah. The Abbasids chose the city, set the guards, and wrote the restrictions — and within those very walls Allah brought forth the father of the one who will end all oppression.
Congratulations to the Master of the Age (may Allah hasten his reappearance) on the birth of his noble father — and congratulations to every heart that keeps their light alive.
